I'd tend to agree. It could potentially go next to the "Filter conversations..." box on the search page, but I think its current position in the top bar is the only suitable place for it as it should be on every page.

Maybe if it stayed in the top bar but was a little bit lighter in color it would be more obvious? I don't know if its color is controlled by the skin color.
