To crontab or not to crontab?

@Toby , not really an esoTalk core related question but perhaps you can shine some light on this as well.
Per https://github.com/tristanvanbokkem/Backup/issues/2 I want to schedule backup creation and pruning. Now I can write code that edits the webserver's crontab but I am not confinced that is the best solution. How would you approach this?

Perhaps just defining a config with x hours/days and comparing that with current date/time and if exceeded run the create function again?

After some more digging around I guess I just have to use cronjobs..

  3. Oh boy, this is getting difficult and I might need some help. I can setup a cronjob though php, no problem. But the problem is writing the actual cron.php which needs to access a function defined in MyCustomController.class.php. It has all kinds of dependencies with ET that I probably need to include hole /lib to get it to work?
